Windows 7 On Dell D610 – No Sound Driver for SigmaTel

After installing the Windows 7 RTM on Dell D610, I found sound does not work and the speaker icon in task bar shows a red x.

After searching in internet I found that D610 has SigmaTel STAC 975X AC97 and I need “SigmaTel STAC 975X AC97 Sound driver for DELL Laptops”. I also find that even SigmaTel STAC 975X AC97 Sound driver for Windows XP will work.

So based on suggestion in this post “SigmaTel STAC 975X AC97 Sound driver for DELL Laptops” I downloaded the driver from ftp://ftp.dell.com/audio/R99254.EXE and installed it on my Dell D610. It creates a directory in C:\dell\drivers and install the required drivers.

After that you will have to go to Computer->Properties->Manage and select Device Manager. It will show a list of devices. You will find Multimedia Audio Controller with an error sign.

Right click on the Multimedia Audio Controller and select Update Driver Software. It will show following screen in which select Browse my computer for driver software. In next screen select the folder location created by Dell driver install C:\dell\drivers.

That’s it. After the install you should see the correct name of the device as Sigma Tell C Major Audio.

  5. Windows 8.1 is awesome. It is ALOT faster than windows 7 and far more intuitive and elegant, The only downside is the lack of proper modern/metro ui apps.

  6. There have been a number of handsets that run on the Windows Phone 7 operating system. Examples of these handsets are the HTC 7 Pro, the Samsung Omnia 7, and the LG Optimus 7. Now, Dell has created its own Windows smartphone with the Dell Venue Pro.
